A democracy needs people who ask critical questions. People who get up, voice their opinions and engage in discussions with others. People who can listen and express themselves. People who debate fairly and objectively.
Therefore, it is important that everyone acquires in school the necessary skills of how and what to debate, and regularly practises debating themselves. Jugend debattiert (Youth Debating) starts right here.
For over ten years, Jugend debattiert has promoted linguistic and political education as well as the formation of opinion and personal development. Jugend debattiert is the largest privately funded project on linguistic and political education in Germany and is offered with a series of lessons to students from grade 5 upwards.
Our teachers have been trained in debating across the curriculum. Using special teaching materials, they now teach the students in class.
From grade 8, students can take part in competitions which take place in two age groups (grades 8-10 and 10-13). The great Asian finals of Jugend debattiert took place for the first time from 1 to 5 June 2018 at the German School Shanghai Hongqiao. GSIS and six other German Schools Abroad from the regions 14 and 15 took part in this debating competition.
