On 17 March 2018 Misha Fischer (Y12) was named the Grand Prize winner at the SCMP HKJC Student of the Year 2017 Awards Presentation Ceremony held at the Kowloon Shangri-La hotel and with Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, among the many honourable guests.
Celebrating its 37th year of honouring student excellence and accomplishments, the SCMP HKJC Student of the Year 2017 attracted a record high of more than 150 schools participating and a total of 675 applications.
"I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity and I am elated at the outcome. Thank you to my teachers and mentors for all of their support and guidance over the years," says Misha.
Thrilled about Misha’s achievement, GSIS Acting Principal Ms Grit Cichon says, “Congratulations, Misha. You have won this prestigious prize, acknowledging you as Hong Kong’s most outstanding and well-rounded secondary school student. Your academic excellence, your wide range of social commitments and your leadership qualities set an example for other young people. What a great achievement for you and our GSIS community. We are very proud of you!”
The judging panel comprised 33 prominent professionals from each of the nine distinct categories. The judges looked for outstanding academic results, other talents and achievements, and meaningful contributions to the community, showing what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication and a commitment to helping others.
“Being named the Student of the Year 2017 is an outstanding achievement for Misha and for GSIS. There was intense competition for this award and Misha’s wide range of academic, leadership and service excellence ultimately assured her of first place. We are all very proud of her success”, says Simon Misso-Veness, Head of English Secondary at GSIS.
“We are very proud of Misha and happy she has been recognised for all of her hard work and focus in pursuit of her passions. We would like to thank the many teachers and others who, over the years, have inspired her”, Misha’s parents Lloyd and Cara Fischer add.
The prestigious event offers the support of members of the SOTY Alumni group, such as GSIS alumnus and former Student of the Year winner (Linguist) Hugh Kam, and a number of highly respected professionals in different fields.
These mentors are a source of inspiration for the younger generation and provide insights in their specific areas of expertise and constructive advice on educational choices and what makes a successful leader.
GSIS also congratulates Arista Lai (Y12) for being awarded 2nd runner up in the Student of the Year – Linguist (English) category.
