Summer Programme

For over 10 years, GSIS has offered Hong Kong students from the ages of 5 to 13 an exciting Summer School Programme at the Peak Campus each August. Due to construction work at the Peak and the temporary relocation of the Upper Primary to Wan Chai as part of the school’s Campus Development Plan, we will open the next Summer School in the refurbished Wan Chai campus in August 2013.

GSIS Summer School provides a range of English language-based activities for children of age 5 – 13. Most participants are from schools other than GSIS, the courses being popular with parents seeking admission to an international school. All of the teachers are experienced native English speakers, drawn primarily from GSIS. Groups are small (maximum 17), with many of the younger groups having an assistant in addition to the teacher, ensuring that students can receive all the personal attention they need.

Summer school provides opportunities to develop confidence in both spoken and written language skills, through co-operative working and a range of fun activities. Where appropriate, students will be taught in rooms equipped with the latest in teaching technologies. Full use will be made of the school’s up to date IT facilities, well-equipped playgrounds, spacious art room, extensive library and, our excellent sports amenities.

Summer school runs from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon, Monday to Friday for two weeks from 1 August to 12 August 2011. Early applicants (those who register on or before Monday, 28 March 2011) will be eligible for a discounted registration fee of HK$ 4,300. Those applications received after Monday, 28 March 2011 must pay the full fee of HK$ 4,600. Please click here to access the online registration form. If you have any queries, please e-mail either the course organiser, Robert Davidson or administrator, Cornelia Zavou.

GSIS is unable to offer transport for Summer School students. Bus 15 from Central and minibus 1 from the IFC run frequently and stop on Guildford Road.

Please be informed that there will be some construction work taking place at GSIS during the time of the Summer School. Although this work will be in an area of the building away from the facilities being used by the classes, there will be some level of periodic noise. At no time will the children be in the area undergoing renovations and all reasonable steps will be taken to ensure safety.

‘Classroom activities’ vary enormously between year groups and teachers, but will be carefully tuned to the needs of individual students. The emphasis in all years is on individually based, active learning, providing students with a stimulating environment where they feel confident using and developing their skills in reading, spoken English and creative writing. Class teachers will be very happy to discuss the programmes of study and your child’s progress at any time during the course.

How do I prepare for GSIS Summer School?
Classes: We try to be as accommodating as possible when admitting students, but this does mean that we can not finalise classes and timetables very early. As a result, we will not be able to confirm which group your child will be in, or swimming timetables, until just a few days before Summer School starts. Materials: We provide all of the materials needed, but your child should come with a range of pens, pencils and coloured pencils or felt tip pens for their personal use.

Dress Code
The only dress code we have for Summer School is “comfortable and practical”. Most days will include some physical activities, so make sure that your child wears appropriate clothing (shorts, t-shirt and trainers are ideal). Remember that they will be using lots of paint and glue, so nothing too new or “designer”.

Transport
Please remember that there is almost no parking close to the school, and the traffic in Guildford Road will be very bad, especially on the first and last days of Summer School. If you can use public transport, please do so. We suggest that if you are coming by car or taxi, you will save yourself a lot of time, and frustration if you can drop off at the main road or at Watford Road and walk the short distance to school. We will have staff on traffic duty, please give them your cooperation when trying to make sure that things go smoothly.

First Day
All students need to go to the IB Hall on the first day to meet their teachers at 8:00 am. This will be clearly signposted. Please do not arrive before 7:30 am as we may not be ready to help you before this time. On all other mornings, students should go to the covered playground where their teachers will meet them at 8:00 am.

Watersports
You will be given a swimming timetable just before Summer School starts. If in any doubt, send your child with a towel and bathing costume.

Severe weather
Summer School follows the normal GSIS procedures for typhoons and rainstorm warnings. You can find official information about current weather warnings at http://www.hko.gov.hk/contente.htm

Helpers
We do not allow parents or helpers inside the school once lessons start.

Last Day
All of the students will be involved in presentations to parents on the last morning of Summer School; we hope that you will be able to attend. There will be two locations, each with 4-5 classes participating, so please check the signs to see that you attend the one where your child is participating.

We welcome students from all backgrounds but we are only permitted to enrol those who have Hong Kong ID or a valid student visa. Information about visas can be found at http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/faq_ipoe.htm. If you have any queries, please e-mail, either the course organiser, Robert Davidson or administrator, Cornelia Zavou.
