Music

The three main elements of the GSIS Music curriculum in the ESD are listening, performing and composing. These skills are developed steadily in Years 7 to 9 as a common course for all students and continued more deeply and rigorously in Years 10 and 11 for those who opt to study GCSE Music. At the moment Music is not offered at A or AS Level.

In Years 7 to 9 the work is divided into units, each of which ends with an assessment. These units are often interlinked and complementary to each other. Emphasis is placed on student involvement, not only in practical work and classroom question-and-answer sessions, but also in musical appreciation, where “active” listening is encouraged and expected. It should be emphasised that the course is geared to all students, from those who are complete beginners to those who have already developed skills through private tuition.

In Years 10 and 11 the students follow the IGCSE course, the syllabus for which can be viewed at http://www.cie.org.uk
