Christmas ConcertGSIS Christmas Bazaar - More Than Just a Bazaar
Time and Time Again - Like a Declaration of Love

This year’s Bazaar showed once again what we cherish so much about our school: it was indeed a vibrant community that the Mothers’ Committee hosted on Saturday, bustling with excitement and enthusiasm, and enriched by diverse traditions from the German and English speaking worlds. Asian food, Swiss raclette, German pretzels and beer, Austrian champagne and jam – the choices were huge and the company excellent. Young and old, long-time Hongkongers and new arrivals, easterners and westerners all came together on Saturday for a day of games, shopping and, above all, making and renewing contacts with other members of the GSIS family. The Upper Building Courtyard was, for one very special day, transformed into the market square of Hong Kong, and with the blue skies, we had the perfect day for a Christmas Bazaar in the best tradition of GSIS.

The Bazaar is like a virus: you catch the bug and you will always feel the pull of the GSIS courtyard as November draws to a close, no matter where you are. Among those returning to Hong Kong this year was Werner Salaw, who summed up his impressions of the day for the GIST:

Saturday, 29th November, 2008. After just a few minutes, I run into Leo and Anita Wong in quick succession – we share a hearty embrace and an enjoyable chat. Then along comes our daughter Jeanine (GSIS Abi 95) with our granddaughter Marlene, who have come from Shanghai just for this event. I pick up our granddaughter and carry her as I continue walking round the bazaar.

On the rooftop I meet Ruediger, a former football friend of mine from my Hong Kong days (1983 - 1997). His son Noah is having his face painted like a tiger; I introduce my granddaughter and we reminisce about the past. Then comes the “Clothes Sale”, where I see Elizabeth, who is everybody’s great favourite at GSIS – I share another hearty embrace and introduce my granddaughter once again. In the schoolyard, I bump into Marco, another of my former football friends that I can proudly show our third grandchild. When I finish walking around the bazaar, I find Jeanine talking to Frau Redl, her former primary school teacher.

I don’t want to bore readers with further details about Renate and Helmut, Uwe and Olivia, Margoty, Hilde, Klaus, Erhart, Renate and Gerd, Andreas, Mike and Inka, and many other former pupils who went to school with our children. But I must just tell you about two other surprises that are really only possible at a bazaar like this. In the early afternoon, our son Achim makes an appearance (GSIS Abi 89); he is now living in Dubai and is actually supposed to be sailing in the “King’s Cup” in Phuket. This means that nearly half the family is gathered here in Hong Kong. The next surprise comes in the form of a former colleague from Puerto Rico, Norman, who I worked with in Seoul for two years, who has been living in Hong Kong for five years and who has a German girlfriend, whose brother is at the GSIS Business College.

My wife, our children and I enjoyed this bazaar like so many others before. Once again we were able to meet many friends of long-standing (some of them, like us, had come especially for the bazaar) and we were able to share memories and experiences. For us the school bazaar is a platform for swapping memories and experiences as well as a place for meeting friends and acquaintances. In our case we find ourselves wondering whether we are a normal family or whether we have caught the GSIS bazaar virus?

Thank you so much to the Mothers’ Committee for a particularly memorable GSIS reunion.

The Christmas Bazaar marks the beginning of the Christmas Season, and time will fly until we break up for the Christmas holidays. I wish you all a very happy festive season, safe holiday travels and a successful 2009.

With warmest regards

Jens-Peter Green
Principal

Christmas Concert
On Wednesday 17th of December, the GSIS annual Christmas Concert will be held at 6:30 pm in the IB hall. You are invited to come along and be entertained by the GSIS school orchestra, which will be performing the famous Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg. Also on the programme are the GSIS secondary choirs. They will be singing well-known Christmas carols as well as some modern classics. The new GSIS clarinet ensemble will also make its debut on the evening. Finally we welcome the GSIS senior mixed choir. Please come and support these talented students as they celebrate the spirit of Christmas through their music.

UK Junior Maths Challenge
Special congratulations to Yves Kwan of Y9 in the ESD. His excellent performance on the UK Junior Maths Challenge last term placed him in the top 0.5% of the worldwide entry and led to an invitation for him to participate in the 2008 Junior Mathematical Olympiad.

Sports Day 2008
There will be two Sports Days again this year:one for Senior Secondary (K11,12,13, Y12, 13) and one for Junior Secondary (K05-10, Y07-11). The Junior Secondary Sports Day will take place on Wednesday, 10 December from 7.40 am to 12.30 pm and the Senior Secondary Sports Day on Thursday, 11 December from 1.30 to 5.00 pm. Both events will take place at the Stanley Ho Sports Centre, Hong Kong University, Pokfulam, 10 Sha Wan Drive (opposite Kennedy Junior School). Parents are very welcome as spectators.

Students of K05-10, Y07-11 will participate in a three-part competition, which consists of a run, a jump and a throw/shot-put. Students of K11, 12, 13 and Y12, 13 will participate in three individual events of their choice, which can include High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, 100m and800m.

Year 8 Physics Photo Project
During the half-term holidays, Year 8 Physics students had an assignment to photograph "Applications of Reflection". Here is a selection of what I consider to be some of the most aesthetically pleasing, though the students' grades were determined more by the quality of the physics. Tim Forrer's picture of an absolutely blank white interior wall billed as a "[reflector for] sound waves" deserves a special mention: accurate science, interesting art and a tribute to Tim's ability to minimise work! Building a Better School
As part of GSIS’ efforts to keep parents informed as to the Campus Development plans, the Building a Better School brochure, along with updated Campus Development Goals and accompanying flyers that were made available for the Annual General Meeting on 25th November, are now available on the GSIS portal. Moreover, in order to get parents more involved in the process, we have drafted a “Consultation Roadmap” – a schedule of information and discussion forums on specific issues related to the Campus Development.

English Primary
The Christmas Bazaar marked the beginning of the festive season and brought together the entire school community to raise money for a common cause and have fun in the process. I endeavoured to visit all of the EPD stalls and there was generally a mixture of industriousness and fun as the students went about their business. A big thank you to the Mothers’ Committee once again for organising this event.

To continue in the festive spirit we have two very exciting concerts to look forward to. The first will be the Year 1, 2 and 3 concert, held during the school day on Thursday December 4. The Year 4, 5 and 6 students will host their concert in the evening on December 11. The programme is top secret but if the sounds that resonate throughout the Primary from music classes and choir are anything to go by these concerts are not to be missed! You will have the opportunity to hear the choirs at our Primary Christmas concerts this year so they will not be participating in the Secondary Christmas concert.

On Friday December 5, we celebrate Nikolaus Day as it is part of the German tradition of Christmas. Nikolaus arrives at the IB Hall in the form of Santa Claus and captivates the children by reading some very special attributes of each class from his ‘golden book’.

Christmas is a time of giving and in particular at this time of the year we encourage our EPD community to show a commitment to service and act to make a difference to the lives of others. To this end, we will be collecting goods for our St James Food Bank so that they too can celebrate the festive season in style. The Year 1 students will visit Mothers Choice to donate the blankets they have made in time for Christmas. We will also support the Esther Benjamin Trust (a charity dedicated to transforming the lives of Nepal’s most vulnerable and forgotten children). Year 6 have just embarked on their community service activity where they will continue the charitable and friendly relationship that has been developed with the Salcedo Elementary School in the Philippines.

The academic programme is our core business at GSIS and the children will be working right up until the holidays to complete units of work for assessment for our end of semester reports in January. For this reason, we actively discourage families from taking their children out of school before the last day. As we have a number of organised events in place to celebrate the festival of Christmas, there will be no class parties during curriculum times. These will need to take place outside school hours.

We had a very busy and successful first term with a variety of sporting events taking place throughout the term: swimming, soccer, biathlon, hockey, netball, and Sports Days. Not all competitions have been completed at the time of writing, so please look to our next edition of the GIST for our sports review of the term.

Business College
The GSIS Business College starts cooperation with the College of Higher Education and the University of Bielefeld.

In mid-December, Business College students will fly to Germany to attend Autumn School. The programme emerged from the cooperation between the Business College andVice-Dean of the College of Higher Education of Bielefeld, Professor Uwe Rössler. Other noted co-operation partners include the University of Bielefeld and the German Academic Exchange Service, which will co-finance the stay of our students.

The Autumn School programme promises to be diversified and interesting for participating students. Besides having the opportunity to visit some local big companies, such as Miele, which takes part in our Hong Kong education programme, as well as Gerry Weber and Dr Oetker, students will also participate in marketing courses at the Universityof Bielefield and the College of Higher Education of Bielefeld. This experience will not only give them insight into the way German companies operate, but also highlight possible career paths.

Our students will make a presentation about work, school and everyday life in Hong Kong. In addition, they will prepare a presentation about Hong Kong as the business gateway to Asia and the gloomy Asian market. There will also be an evening programme to ensure that students get access to the local community and to exchange students of many different origins. Among the places that students will be visitingwhile on the programme are the Christmas market, the old town of Bielefeld and the local football stadium.

Mothers' Committee
This November has been a very special month for the Mothers’ Committee and the school. Our Chairperson, Eliza Fok presented the school with two cheques, one for $1,000,000, which will go towards the development of the IT Rooms in the school’s campus development program and a second cheque for $200,000 for the Endowment Fund to help less fortunate students attend the school. This money was raised through the hard work and efforts of parents, students, teachers, faculty and donors from proceeds of the Spring Ball, Flea Market and Christmas Bazaar. Normally, the money we raise goes back to the school through paying for the year book, cafeteria costs, individual requests from teachers for sponsorship, refreshments, etc. So you can imagine our delight to be able to give the money over and above our yearly expenses. For the first time, these cheques were presented in all three school assemblies (Primary, Junior and Senior) so that each student could see and understand how much money was raised for the school. Their help with the stalls at the bazaar and selling raffle tickets for the ball was paramount to helping us all reach the goal of raising money for the school. A big thank you to everyone for such a splendid job.

At the time of writing, the Mothers’ Committee are busy preparing for the Christmas Bazaar. Even in the midst of a financial tsunami, our friends within the GSIS community have been a great power of strength and have still given very generously to our cause. It’s a difficult time for everyone and we appreciate every donor and sponsor who have helped to make this bazaar the best school bazaar in Hong Kong.

First place winner of this year’s Bazaar Poster Competition was Sophie Chan in Y05C, who will receive a gift voucher for $300. Again this year, we had a wonderful collection of different designs which made it very difficult for our panel of judges to choose from. Second and third place winners were Sophie Haik (Y03B) and Sophie Taylor Y05c.
