Community Involvement
Markus Knösel Memorial Fund

Past Fund-raising

After the tragic loss of Markus Knösel, a dear colleague, teacher and friend, in the ‘Asian Tsunami’ of December 2004, the German Swiss International School set up the Markus Knösel Memorial Foundation in order to support education in the tsunami-affected country of Thailand. Since the Foundation was established in January 2005 it has raised over HKD 350 000 to date.

Phase 1: Completed

The money raised has been put to a great cause to improve schools in Thailand and it has certainly done so. In projects such as the school extension of the Kuraburi Primary School, the Foundation has helped students in these tsunami-affected areas to get a better education.

Phase 2: Completed

During 2007-2008 the open space courtyard was converted to an assembly hall that provided the school with a sheltered areas for assemblies, sports and dance. The hall will also be used for community meetings after school.

Phase 3:2008-2010

The next project will involve the renovation of the kitchen and canteen. This is likely to take two to three years to finance and rebuild.

Through on-going efforts with other community organisations at GSIS, the Markus Knösel Memorial Fund continues to raise money to contribute towards tsunami-affected schools in Thailand and hopes to continue to benefit the lives of many.
