Debating
The Debating Society at GSIS is a thriving one with large numbers of students participating both at senior and junior level. In-house debates and debating competitions are held throughout the year as well as debating workshops. Our debating team has proved very successful over recent years, reaching the finals of the ESF World Debating Competition in 2002 and 2004. In September 2005 some twenty GSIS students travelled to Bangkok to participate in the Harvard Model Congress Asia.

Model United Nations
This reproduction of the United Nations General Assembly takes place every year and Hong Kong's top school, representing a variety of countries, indulge in a very high level of debate. GSIS sends two teams each year and a large number of students are involved in the research and preparation of position papers, as well as taking part in the actual debates.

Hong Kong Award for Young People (HKAYP)
Formerly known as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, this is an internationally recognized award that encourages students to take part in a range of activities. Students are required to learn a new skill, take part in a sport, spend time in a service activity and participate in an expedition. GSIS provides opportunities for the first three of these and provides the expedition training and assessment for the Bronze and Silver Awards. This involves the students taking part in classroom training sessions as well as weekend camps in the New Territories. These expeditions provide a really enjoyable challenge to the students and they do much to develop independence.

Junior Achievement International (JAI)
Each year we offer both the JAI Management & Economic Simulation Exercise and the JAI Company Programme. The latter involves students setting up their own company, running it for three months and then liquidating it. GSIS teams have proved very successful as in 2004 our team came third in the JAI Hong Kong Business Challenge and in 2005 our company T.ag+ were runner-up in the presentation category of the Company Programme Awards.

H.E.L.P. Group and Lend-A-Hand
These two student led groups have been established to help co-ordinate fund-raising efforts in the school community as well as to facilitate student involvement in charity organisations. The H.E.L.P Group works with the senior students whilst Lend-A-Hand focuses on our younger students.

Environmental Protection Club (EPC)
This club works to increase awareness of the environment within the school community. This involves a beach clean-up each October as well as other initiatives to raise funds. In 2004/05 the EPC co-ordinated efforts in the school which raised funds to support Animals Asia's work to free two Moon Bears from captivity in China. Students involved in EPC also have the opportunity to represent the school as Senior Environmental Protection Ambassadors (SEPA).

SV / Student Council
Each class elects two representatives to sit on the Student Council for the academic year. It is their job to represent their class at SV meetings, raising matters that concern them. In their senior year students can stand for election as Presidents of the Student Council.

Prefects
Each year teachers elect about 20 students from Year 13 and Klasse 12 and 13 as Prefects. The Prefects assist at a number of school functions, raise money for charity and generally set an example to younger students.

Extra Curricular Activities Programme (ECA)
This programme is part of the school curriculum in the International Secondary Department and from Year 10 onwards students must participate in a variety of courses and activities of their choice. These include an introduction to a range of skills such as cookery, crafts, chess, circus, etc. Students are also encouraged to get involved in community service such as assisting with Kindergarten and Primary classes or making a regular commitment to help at charities such as Mothers' Choice, UNICEF or Watchdog. The production of the senior school newspaper is also part of the ECA programme.
